Video footage of the incident, though, appears to dispute this.
Court documents that were recently released reveal the shooter’s side of the story as well as witness statements and the contents of surveillance video.
Jason Stone, 33, of East Hartford, said he shot Albertus Magnus basketball player Jaquawn Walters, of Hartford, 24, following a drug deal.
Surveillance video appears to show Walters walking backward away from Stone. Stone appears to shoot Walters, then stands over Walters while Walters is on the ground and shoots him again, according to WFSB.
Stone said on Saturday, Sept. 19, he went to Jam-Roc Jamaican Restaurant on Main Street in Hartford and ordered food. While waiting, he went outside to buy marijuana, court documents state.
Stone said he purchased $20 worth of marijuana from Walters, but he didn’t get a bag for the drugs. Walters allegedly told Stone that he only gave bags to people who bought $40 or more worth of weed.
Stone was walking away when, he said, a woman pulled up in a red Jeep and purchased some marijuana from Walters as well. She also wanted a bag for her drugs. Stone said he was having the same problem and the customers laughed about the situation.
Then Walters mumbled something, according to Stone. Stone said that Walters was acting like he “ran the whole block” and went to go back to the restaurant.
That’s when Walters allegedly attacked Stone, charging him and grabbing him by the throat with both hands, choking Stone, court documents said.
The woman then allegedly got out of her car and tried to separate the men. A male exited the restaurant and also tried to pull the men apart, WFSB reported.
Stone had a firearm concealed in his waistband, Stone said. Stone said he eventually freed himself from Walters’ alleged grasp and then shot Walters once.
Stone said that after the shooting he ran through the restaurant and into his car where he called 911 telling the dispatcher he had shot someone in self-defense.
